When you make the decision to bring a new cat into your home, it’s usually a lot more exiting for you and your family than for the cat you already have. Even though a lot of cats prefer to be alone, most of them will eventually accept the new cat. Cats can often be territorial, so you should be careful when introducing a new cat to the cat you already have. When you introduce kittens to each other, it could be short and last as little as 10 to 15 days. The way a cat reacts when you introduce a new one depends on the cat’s personality and temperament. When you introduce the new cat to the one you already have you want to be sure to give your first cat plenty of attention so he will feel secure and know he isn’t in competition for attention with the new cat.
After bringing your new cat home you should let it stay in a room by itself until you have introduced the other cats. The safe room could be a bathroom or a guest room. The point is to put the new cat in a room your current cat never goes in. You should leave some stuff in the room for the cat like a food and water dish, a litter box, a bed, and a scratching post. Your first cat may stand at the door howling and hissing to tell the other cat that he doesn’t belong. If this happens its best just to let it go, as it will only lead to further problems. Eventually the cat will be calmer when he goes near the door; this is when you should praise him for him.
When your first cat goes by the door and doesn’t hiss or howl, you can introduce them to one another. The best way to get them used to each other is to get them used to each others scent. You could do this by letting them eat out of the same dish. Even though you want to feed them at different times, the scent will be in the dish and the cat will get it by eating. After both of them have gotten used to the other ones scent, you can start feeding them closer together. When you do this, you should put the new cat in back in his safe room and close the door, and your first cat with his food dish on the other side of the door, this time feeding them at the same time. After a few times of doing this, they should eat without hissing or growling at each other. By this point, you should introduce them to each other.
Hissing and growling is expected when introducing them in the same room, even though they are used to each others scent. It may make your first cat feel awkward because the new cat is in his territory. At first you should play with both of them, so they can smell each other and greet each other in their own way. If they start fighting its best to split them up and give them time away from each other. It might take a while for them to fully get to know each other. But once they do they should be come friends and playmates for life. Cats love being social but at first it may be a little tough, even more for the first cat. Cats can be extremely territorial, more so if you there’s a kitten around. If you can get them used to other early on, it will be easier to get Moe cats in the future.
